Cold Weather Tips

With the onset of cooler/colder weather, we would like to give you a few hints on what to expect of varnishes with the cold temperatures. Cold weather usually brings complaints about varnish clouding and separating and we would like to offer the following suggestions to help eliminate this:

  • When adding fresh varnish or solvent, be sure that the temperature of both ingredients is about the same. If the thinner or varnish is stored outside, bring it indoors a day or two ahead and check the temperature before mixing.
  • Add not more than 10% thinner at one time. If more than 10% is required, add it in two or more parts, mixing well after each addition.
  • Add thinners slowly with strong agitation to assure thorough blending so that a white cloud does not form.
Please pass these suggestions onto your customers so they will continue to obtain optimum results with their varnish.
